Calculate AI mention and citation rates

Turn manually reviewed AI answers into clear mention and citation percentages. Record your sample context and download a report with the denominator and limitations included.

Calculate rates from answers you already reviewed. Count each answer once per metric, even if it repeats the brand or links several times.

Mention rate

Of all answers in your sample

Citation rate

Of all answers in your sample

Mentions and citations are independent and may overlap. A citation need not spell out your brand. Keep engines and prompt sets separate when comparing results. These rates do not measure recommendation quality or referral traffic.

How to use the ai visibility calculator

  1. Review a defined answer set

Use a documented list of prompts and record the engine, browsing mode, location and dates. Separate successful answers from failed requests before choosing your denominator.

  2. Count answers rather than occurrences

Count an answer once if it names the brand, and once if it links to your site. These independent categories may overlap. Do not count repeated mentions or multiple links within one answer several times.

  3. Calculate and preserve the evidence

Enter the total and both counts. Download the report and keep it beside the underlying responses so someone else can reproduce your calculation.

Worked example

Suppose you review 40 answers from one engine. Twelve name your brand and five link to your site. The mention rate is 12 ÷ 40 × 100 = 30%; the citation rate is 5 ÷ 40 × 100 = 12.5%. These are illustrative numbers, not RankVyze customer results. They describe those 40 answers and no larger population.

Keep the denominator comparable

Changing the prompts can change the rate without any change to your website. Track brand-led questions separately from unbranded buying questions, and do not silently combine engines with different sample sizes. A mention can be negative or irrelevant; read the answer and record whether it accurately describes the product before deciding what to change.

Questions about this tool

Does the calculator query ChatGPT or another engine?
No. It calculates percentages from counts you supply after reviewing answers yourself. It does not contact an AI service or verify the observations.
What is the formula?
Mention rate equals answers mentioning your brand divided by total reviewed answers, multiplied by 100. Citation rate uses answers linking to your site divided by the same total. An answer counts at most once within each metric.
Can citations exceed mentions?
Yes, if answers link to your site without naming your brand. The two counts are independent, can overlap, and must each be no greater than the total reviewed answers.
Is this a market-wide visibility score?
No. It describes only your selected sample. Prompt selection, engine, browsing mode, date and repeated runs affect the result. Compare equivalent samples and keep the raw answers.
